Mavericks’ Luka Doncic picked up 16th technical foul, here are his others this season

As the Mavericks work toward clinching a playoff spot, Luka Doncic met a less-desirable benchmark- 16 technical fouls. Maville Mavericks' Luka Doncic picked up 16th technical fouls this season, with Dallas Mavericks' coach Jason Kidd and fans criticizing his demeanor with officials. NBA rules dictate that a player will face an automatic one-game suspension for drawing 16 technical foul in a regular season and one-match suspension for every two techs after No. 16, and a one- game suspension for each of the other two. With 16 technicals through 59 games he's played this season and seven games remaining in the regular season, DoncIC is averaging one every 3.68 outings, while only Dillon Brooks and Draymond Green have been given the most techs among all NBA players this season. The NBA rescinded DonCic’s technical foul Dec. 12 vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder, leaving him slotted behind only the Memphis Grizzlies’ Dillon Brooks (who served his a suspension Sunday for Tech No.16) and Golden State Warriors star Draymonds Green (15) for the most technicals among NBA players.

As the Mavericks fight for their playoff lives, Luka Doncic met a less-desirable benchmark Sunday in Charlotte:

Here we go, again.

Only this season, Doncic seems less in control, his demeanor with officials prompting public criticism from coach Jason Kidd, commentators and fans.

NBA rules dictate a player will face an automatic one-game suspension for drawing 16 technical fouls in a regular season and will also serve a one-game suspension for every two techs after No. 16. The tech count restarts in the playoffs, with a one-game suspension after No. 7.

Doncic and the Mavericks are familiar with the limits.

Last year, Doncic drew 17 techs before the playoffs, but the NBA rescinded two, including one in the penultimate game that allowed him to avoid the first suspension of his career.

With 16 technicals through the 59 games he’s played this season, Doncic is averaging one every 3.68 outings.

Dallas has seven games remaining in the regular season.

Officials called Doncic for a technical foul Sunday afternoon during the Mavericks’ game against the Charlotte Hornets after Doncic missed a close-range shot attempt and argued for a foul.

His frequent arguing with officials could force him to miss crucial time in the Mavericks’ push to earn a top-six, guaranteed playoff spot in the uber-crowded Western Conference.

Heading toward a suspension last season, Doncic openly quelled his arguments and demonstrative interactions with officials to receive just three techs in 21 games after the mid-February All-Star break.

He has drew three technical fouls in the Mavericks’ first five games after returning from the All-Star break Feb. 23, including for excessive complaining Feb. 28 against the Indiana Pacers and for a heated confrontation with Devin Booker on March 5 against the Phoenix Suns.

Nine of Doncic’s 16 techs, including his six since the 2023 calendar year started, have come during home games.

He’s slotted behind only the Memphis Grizzlies’ Dillon Brooks (who served his a suspension Sunday for Tech No. 16) and Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green (15) for the most techs among all NBA players this season.

Note: The NBA rescinded Doncic’s technical foul Dec. 12 vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.
