Clutching a Whataburger bag and two large drinks, Derrick Lambert defended his sartorial choices.

“I ain’t fresh?” he asked a group of women mocking him outside an Arlington fast food restaurant for his clothes: a light blue and white striped Ralph Lauren polo over a white T-shirt, starched blue jeans and light blue New Balance sneakers.

In the now-viral clip posted March 19, the women laugh. No, they do not find him fresh.

But the 11-second video catapulted 40-year-old Lambert to viral social media fame, inspiring an instant meme and earning him a shopping spree with clothing brand LRG at a Dallas Dillard’s. On March 28, LRG and Lambert flew to New Orleans for a photo shoot on Bourbon Street. That night, Lambert sat courtside at a Pelicans game.

And on Thursday, LRG launched a line of $30 T-shirts emblazoned with the catchphrase “I ain’t fresh.” Half of the profits will go to Lambert.

“It was just natural, man. It was spur of the moment,” Lambert told Complex about his response to the women. “They done made it like a national anthem.”

The night he picked up Whataburger, Lambert said he was tired and trying to mind his own business, according to Complex, which reports on pop culture. He is not a fan of social media and even told the women to stop recording him.

While the women did not find Lambert fresh, countless others on social media came to his defense after the video posted. Some said they planned to dress as Lambert for Halloween, and others estimated his outfit costs between $300 and $400.

“He actually looks good imo,” one person wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Clothes are properly color coordinated, hair is neat, he’s not overly rude or disrespectful, goatee lined up.”

Lambert described the polo, jeans and New Balance shoes as his “weekend outfit” when he goes out.

“You’re supposed to look nice, to the best of your ability,” he told Complex “That’s all that is.”

Lambert did not initially know his Whataburger encounter had gone viral until his cousin sent him a message telling him. Lambert said he was heartened that people defended his outfit.

With newfound internet fame, Lambert said a couple other clothing brands have reached out to collaborate, but he has no plans to change his own style, including starched jeans.

“Everybody has their own style. A lot of us dress like this, the way I dress, but I’ve been dressing like this ever since I was in junior high,” he said. “I like my jeans starched with the crease. It’s a Southern thing, where I’m from anyway.”

One thing will change, though, Lambert conceded. When asked by Complex how he plans to keep the momentum going, he replied, “Whatever the people want to see. I guess I’m going to have to turn into a social media person.”
